What Is An Intensive Driving Course?

Traditionally people have learned to drive by having one driving lesson per week. So, for example, twelve lessons would take twelve weeks. An Intensive Driving Course delivers the same training in a shorter time frame. They will run over a number of consecutive days with more than one lesson per day.
How Long Are The Intensive Driving Courses?

Kudos Driver Training offer can offer bespoke courses over any number of days to suit the trainee but also run Weekend Courses (2 days), Bank Holiday Courses (3 days) and Week Courses (5 days).

Who Are They Designed For?

We offer five levels of Intensive Driving Courses depending upon the trainee’s previous experience and ability:

Level 1: New Learner

This is for new Learner Drivers with no prior driving experience

Level 2: Part Trained Learners

This is for Learner Drivers who have already had 12+ hours of professional instruction.

Level 3: Fully Trained Learners

This is for Learner Drivers who have

  1. Passed their Theory Test, and
  2. Been trained on the whole DVSA syllabus

and are just wanting to practice prior to a driving test.

Level 4: Full Licence Holder

This is for Full Licence Holders who are newly qualified or wanting to refresh their driving skills

Level 5: Full Licence Holder

This is for a Full Licence Holder who wishes to develop their driving skills to an advanced standard

It there is any doubt over which level a trainee may require then a ‘test drive’ would be arranged to identify it.
Why Choose An Intensive Course?
The most recent Government report by the Department Of Transport [Cohort II: A Study of Learner and New Drivers, 2008] shows that to pass the practical driving test in the United Kingdom the average learner has 47 hours of professional tuition over a period of about thirteen months.

This equates to less than one hour per week. The apparent benefit of only having a one-hour lesson each week is that it would be easier to manage financially but it likely to cost more overall as more lessons will be needed.

There will be a period at the beginning of every lesson when the instructor/trainee exchange pleasantries, the trainee sets up the car (running through the ‘cockpit drill’), the last lesson is recapped, the new lesson objectives are discussed and there may well be the need to drive to a suitable practice area. If double-lessons are used then this time could be halved over the course of the training programme. The length of time would vary depending on the complexity of the lesson but typically it would be between 5 and 10 minutes – so the average learner could benefit by having only 22 double-lessons (44 hours rather than 47 hours).
We recognise this at Kudos Driver Training and so always advocate double lessons. Plus, there are additional benefits to increasing the frequency of the lessons too.

When a new skill is being learned it takes a conscious ‘active effort’ and then, after frequent practice, it becomes an ‘automatic ability’ that is hard-wired in the brain’s neural pathways. The frequency of the practice has an impact on how quickly the required level of performance is attained. An analogy sometimes used is that practicing a new skill creates a neural pathway like someone walking through long grass. Walk through once and the grass will be knocked down but will spring back. Walking through a few times and the grass gets trodden down and a pathway starts to form. When there is a break in the walking, the grass will try to spring back or grow through causing the path to fade. Only when the grass is given no opportunity to spring back / grow though will the path become permanent – which will occur through more frequent walks through the grass. Infrequent walks, that allow the grass to grow and pathway to fade result in the pathway needing to be re-established each time. So, the more frequent the practice the quicker the neural pathways get established – the quicker someone learns a new skill like driving.
What Is Involved?
Kudos Driver Training Intensive Courses are designed around seven hours of one-to-one tuition per day but the number of days is tailored to the trainee’s individual requirements.

We know increasing the frequency increases the effectiveness but there is a limit to the amount of practice that can be sustained because the ‘active effort’ can be quite exhausting. So we design our courses around three double-lessons in the car punctuated with adequate rest and professional discussions.

Although having some knowledge and understanding of driving theory and legislation is not a legal requirement before taking practical driving lessons it is a great benefit as it is likely to reduce the amount of ‘kerbside’ discussions during a lesson.

All trainees learning to drive with Kudos Driver Training we will be provided with online theory test materials prior to their practical lessons. They will have an account on the Theory Test Pro website (www.theorytestpro.co.uk) which gives them access to the Highway Code and the all the latest official revision test questions licensed  from the DVSA, including the Hazard Perception Test.
Not only will trainees on the Intensive Courses have access to the theory prior to starting the course but short theory sessions are scheduled into the programme. In these 1-to-1 professional discussions the instructor will support the trainee with learning the theory.

A typical training day on an intensive driving course would run from 9 am to 5 pm and be comprised of three double lessons of 1-to-1 ‘in car’ training coupled with professional discussions (amounting to an hour of theory training) along with appropriate with rest breaks.

For example

9 am to 11 am                -    2 hour driving lesson
11 am to 11:20 am        -    Professional discussion
11:20 am to 11:40 am   -    Refreshment break
11:40 am to 1:40 pm     -    2 hour driving lesson
1:40 pm to 2 pm            -    Profession discussion
14 pm to 2:40 pm          -    Refreshment break
2:40 pm to 4:40 pm       -    2 hour driving lesson
4:40 pm to 5 pm            -    Professional discussion

Where Are They Held?

Kudos Driver Training offers training to people within 10 miles of St Neots but utilises all Driving Test Centres in the area depending on the availability of tests at the time. So, trainees will be picked up and dropped off from their preferred address within this area and the lessons will be at the location most suited to their training needs.

How Much Do They Cost?

The usual rates (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum price packages) will be used to calculate the cost of both bespoke and standard courses.

For example, the usual price for a standard weekend course (8 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday) will be £499 (using the Silver Pricing Package).

We can tailor our standard courses or design a bespoke course to meet the individual needs of the trainee.
